Destinations to Visit on a Uganda Safari
Murchison Falls National Park
Murchison Falls National Park in northern Uganda is named after the spectacular Murchison Falls, where the Nile River plunges through a narrow gorge with immense force. This dramatic waterfall draws visitors, but the park’s epic landscapes, diverse habitats, and excellent biodiversity make them stay.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi is the premier gorilla trekking destination. From one of four trailheads; Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, or Nkuringo, you join a group of 8 visitors to track of one of the 24 habituated families. Each trail offers unique characteristics and varying levels of difficulty, making every trek an adventure.
Queen Elizabeth National Park
Queen Elizabeth National Park is renowned for diverse wildlife, including the tree-climbing lions and leopards. Game drives across the park reveal an abundance of big game, such as elephants, buffalo & antelopes. A highlight of the park is the boat safari on the Kazinga Channel, which links Lake Edward & George.
Kibale Forest National Park
Kibale Forest National Park is famous for its population of chimpanzees, drawing visitors keen to observe these fascinating primates in their natural habitat. The park offers guided treks led by Uganda Wildlife Authority Rangers, who take small groups deep into the forest to track and observe chimpanzees.
Lake Mburo National Park
Lake Mburo National Park is often included in itineraries as a scenic stopover between Bwindi and other destinations. Its picturesque landscapes and improving wildlife population make it a delightful highlight of any trip. Visitors can explore the park’s beauty through various activities.
Kidepo Valley National Park
Kidepo Valley National Park is Uganda’s most isolated national park. Cut off for years by conflict, it has only recently become accessible by road and air. However, those who make the journey are rewarded with a truly off-the-beaten-path experience. The park is home to 77 mammal species.
Mgahinga National Park
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a less frequented but equally enchanting destination for gorilla trekking. This park offers a more secluded experience compared to Bwindi. Treks here are generally less demanding, making it an appealing option for visitors seeking a more relaxed adventure.
Semliki National Park
Uganda’s first protected area, the Semliki Valley, lies on the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, south of Lake Albert, below the Kijura Escarpment, and the northern foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains. This park offers an introduction to the habitats of Central Africa bar leaving Uganda.
The Rwenzori Mountains
The Rwenzori Mountains, “Mountains of the Moon,” offer one of the most exciting and challenging trekking experiences in the world. The highest peak, Mount Stanley’s Margherita Peak, rises to 5,109 meters. The remote location & diverse vegetation, make trekking in the ranges a special experience.

Best Time to Visit Uganda on a Safari
The best time to visit Uganda is during its dry seasons, spanning June, July, August, December, January, and February. These months offer optimal conditions for exploring the country’s diverse landscapes and rich wildlife. June through August marks the longest dry season, while December to February is the shortest dry period. Both intervals are ideal for a primate experience and safaris, as the rainforests, although never completely dry, are more accessible and the weather is generally more favorable.
June to September is considered the high or peak season for tourism in Uganda. This is the best time for activities such as gorilla trekking, necessitating advance booking of permits due to high demand. The clear skies and abundant sunshine make it easier to spot wildlife, especially in the savannah reserves where animals congregate around water sources.
On the contrary, the low seasons from March to May and October to November are characterized by heavier rainfall. While these months offer lush green landscapes, they pose challenges for accessibility and wildlife viewing. The heaviest rains fall from March to May, resulting in the worst weather for travel. Roads in and around national parks can become difficult to navigate, particularly for non-4WD vehicles, and forest trails may become slippery and challenging to hike. Despite these difficulties, visiting during the low season can be advantageous due to discounted rates and the chance to witness newborn animals.
January to February and June to July have the best weather conditions, offering a perfect balance of sunshine and minimal rain. These conditions enhance the safari experience, providing better opportunities to view wildlife in their natural habitats. Conversely, with its heavy rainfall, March to May represents the worst weather period for visitors.
Overall, the dry seasons from June to September and December to February are ideal for visiting Uganda’s safari parks, tracking gorillas, and enjoying the country’s natural beauty. Even during the peak season, the parks are not overly crowded, ensuring a more intimate and enjoyable experience. However, be prepared for the challenges of the wet seasons, including difficult travel conditions and the necessity to proceed with planned activities despite the rain.
