Best Time to Visit Uganda on a Safari

The best time to visit Uganda is during its dry seasons, spanning June, July, August, December, January, and February. These months offer optimal conditions for exploring the country’s diverse landscapes and rich wildlife. June through August marks the longest dry season, while December to February is the shortest dry period. Both intervals are ideal for a primate experience and safaris, as the rainforests, although never completely dry, are more accessible and the weather is generally more favorable.

June to September is considered the high or peak season for tourism in Uganda. This is the best time for activities such as gorilla trekking, necessitating advance booking of permits due to high demand. The clear skies and abundant sunshine make it easier to spot wildlife, especially in the savannah reserves where animals congregate around water sources.

On the contrary, the low seasons from March to May and October to November are characterized by heavier rainfall. While these months offer lush green landscapes, they pose challenges for accessibility and wildlife viewing. The heaviest rains fall from March to May, resulting in the worst weather for travel. Roads in and around national parks can become difficult to navigate, particularly for non-4WD vehicles, and forest trails may become slippery and challenging to hike. Despite these difficulties, visiting during the low season can be advantageous due to discounted rates and the chance to witness newborn animals.

January to February and June to July have the best weather conditions, offering a perfect balance of sunshine and minimal rain. These conditions enhance the safari experience, providing better opportunities to view wildlife in their natural habitats. Conversely, with its heavy rainfall, March to May represents the worst weather period for visitors.

Overall, the dry seasons from June to September and December to February are ideal for visiting Uganda’s safari parks, tracking gorillas, and enjoying the country’s natural beauty.
